Employment at ADF | American Dance Festival

Each summer during its annual season, the ADF offers internships in all areas of arts administration and production. Administrative internships are intended to give hands-on experience to those interested in a career in arts management. Production interns work on the crew for the 40-plus performances of the ADF season. All interns work as integral parts of the ADF staff in an invigorating arts environment and play an important role in carrying out the ADF’s mission to serve dance, dancers, choreographers and artists in related fields.
Available Positions | A Day in the Life of an ADF Intern

Dates: May 27 - July 21, 2008 (the dates of some internships may vary)
Due to the intense nature of the ADF season, most internships require evening and weekend work. All interns must be available to work opening and closing weekends.

Location: The ADF is held at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. The studios and administrative offices are spread across the Georgian-style campus. Performances by visiting dance companies occur in Page Auditorium and Reynolds Industries Theater on West Campus.

Benefits:

“My experience as a press intern at the ADF was invaluable. Most of all, it helped me obtain my current position in fundraising and marketing with a non-profit dance organization.” –Shellie Aldridge (ADF Intern 2003), currently the Development & Communications Coordinator at the Children’s Dance Foundation of Alabama

ADF interns benefit from the Festival’s position as creative laboratory and a magnet for national and international exchange. Students and community members interact directly with luminaries in the field, learning first-hand from those who define modern dance. All interns may take one class through the ADF Six Week School, which includes more than 40 classes a day. Additional benefits include:

One complimentary ticket to each program in the ADF season, which features 50 performances by the best dance companies from around the world.

Access to the ADF photographic, film and video archival collections, which span more than 70 years of modern dance history.

Invitations to panel discussions with artists and scholars, seminars, lectures and informal showings throughout the summer.

Access to screenings of films selected as part of Dancing for the Camera: International Festival of Film and Video Dance.

Participation in a weekly seminar on relevant issues in the arts with guest speakers, including arts council members, representatives of funding organizations, critics/reporters, public relations/marketing professionals, and ADF board, staff and faculty members.

Additional activities are available as work schedules permit.

Staff Supervision: The internship program is directed by Cynthia Wyse, Director of Finance and Administration. Each intern is supervised by the professional ADF staff member of their chosen department. ADF maintains a permanent year-round staff of twelve that expands as the summer season approaches.

Academic Credit:
ADF will work with the intern’s college/university to arrange academic credit for the internship, if desired.

Stipend: All interns receive a stipend.

Housing: Interns are responsible for their own transportation, food and housing. A driver's license and/or car are needed for some internships. Apartments and shares (mostly sublets) are available in the local area. More information about housing will be provided upon acceptance to the program.
