ADF | International Arts Management (IAM)

ADF’s 1999 International Arts Management/Cultural Tourism Program

ADF’s three-week IAM program was directed by Art Waber and had seven participants (see list below). In addition, three participants from ADF's 1999 International Choreographers Residency Program Cristina Castro and Rachel Zuanon (Brazil), and Hanna Barbara (Switzerland), attended nearly every session. Each day (Monday through Friday) was divided into a morning session (10:00-12:00) and afternoon session (1:00-3:00), with a break for lunch. The Wednesday afternoon session was set aside each week for individual consultation sessions. There was also an office space set aside for the IAM program, along with a lending library of books and articles devoted to arts management.

Prior to their arrival at ADF, each participant talked about their most important management issues and challenges, and what was and was not working for them. After the most important issues were identified, the ADF responded with a flexible schedule and curriculum. The most important issues identified at the outset were fundraising, company management, audience development, marketing, professional linkages and international networking with colleagues and institutions.

During the three weeks, individual and panel presentations were devoted to company management, cultural tourism at home and abroad, fundraising, community outreach, marketing and season ticket sales campaigns, press relations, booking and touring, service organizations, advocacy, record retention and archival preservation, dance criticism, computers and internet access, grantwriting, and design/construction of offices, studio space, and dance floors. In addition to the IAM discussions, they joined the ADF administrative interns for seminars each Wednesday for topics including "Inside the ADF", "Creating and Educating Audiences for the Arts", and "Artists and Audiences".
