DIANNE MCINTYRE
DianneMcintyreDianne McIntyre’s 2006 New York Dance and Performance (“Bessie”) Award Special Citation states, “…for daring to explore new areas of expression by fusing dance, live music, and words; and then to inspire the creative voices of generations of choreographers and dancers.” Her early mentors were Cleveland’s Elaine Gibbs, the faculty of The Ohio State University’s Department of Dance, and, in New York City, Gus Solomons jr and dance presenter Louise Roberts. Her company of dancers and musicians Sounds in Motion (1972–1988) inspired her collaboration with numerous jazz music masters. The company performed in all major dance venues—Joyce Theater, BAM, Dance Theatre Workshop, Aaron Davis Hall, and Lincoln Center—and toured internationally. McIntyre and the Company ran a school in New York City where she cultivated and presented many budding dance artists. Today she continues to create collaborative works, often with blues, jazz, and folk, Bard-man Olu Dara. She has taught at the ADF (1992, 1993, 1995, 2007), Jacob’s Pillow, and the Bates Dance Festival, and has been in residence at countless universities, most recently University of Maryland-College Park, Western Michigan University, Oberlin College, and Howard University. Her choreography has been seen on Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Cleo Parker Robinson Ensemble, Dallas Black Dance, Philadanco, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and has been seen in 40 plays, including on Broadway and in US regional and London theatre. For film and television she choreographed for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf (PBS), Beloved (Harpo/Disney), and Miss Evers’ Boys (HBO), for which she received an Emmy nomination. McIntyre is also a Helen Tamiris “specialist,” having revived the dance pioneer’s 1937 How Long, Brethren? and performed her Negro Spirituals, reintroducing the arts world and scores of student and professional dancers to the stark power and passion of early modern dance. Awards include three New York Dance and Performance (“Bessie”) Awards (1989, 1997, 2006); two AUDELCO’s (New York Black Theatre); one Helen Hayes award and four nominations (Washington, DC, theater); numerous grants, fellowships, and commissions, including the prestigious National Endowment for the Arts Three-Year Choreographers Fellowship. Through a 2007 Guggenheim Fellowship, McIntyre is currently developing a new choreo-drama and introducing dancers to the improvisational connection between dance and music.
